Fuels for a super-lean burn engine are required to have both high knock resistance and stable flame propagation. To obtain these fuel properties, two components of nitromethane and furan were added to the gasoline surrogate. Using the high-pressure shock tube with a long heating duration of 33 ms, the ignition delay times of the gasoline surrogate containing these two components were measured in a very wide temperature range. Self-ignition of the gasoline surrogate was suppressed by the effect of furan in the lower temperature region related to knock performance, while in the high temperature region associated with stable flame propagation, it was promoted by the effect of nitromethane. By adding such multiple components to gasoline, we found to be able to design fuels suitable for a super-lean burn engine.
